London, England - Scot Andy Murray kicked off Group-B play at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals with a victory over Robin Soderling of Sweden.
Aussie Open runner-up Murray took down French Open runner-up Soderling 6-2, 6-4 in 80 minutes at London's O2 Arena. The 23-year-old Scot fired 10 aces past Soderling.
Group B is led by the great Roger Federer, who is a four-time winner at this event. Federer takes on David Ferrer, the 2007 World Tour Finals runner-up, later Sunday.
Federer won this prestigious event in 2003 and 2004 in Houston and in 2006 and 2007 in Shanghai. He was a runner-up in Shanghai in 2005.
World No. 1 Rafael Nadal leads Group A, which also features U.S. Open runner- up Novak Djokovic, Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych and Andy Roddick.
The first six days of this event will feature round-robin play, as the top-two players from each group will land in the semifinals. The lucrative final will be staged on Sunday, November 28.
Last year's World Tour Finals champion and 2008 runner-up Nikolay Davydenko failed to qualify for this year's exclusive eight-player field. Davydenko's victim in last year's finale in London was towering Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, who also failed to qualify this year.
On Monday, Djokovic will encounter Berdych in the first match and Nadal will battle the former world No. 1 Roddick in the second.
